John Edward Verbout

14 May 1944-01 June 2017

John Edward Verbout, Jr., 73, passed away at home on June 1, 2017 at 3 a.m.in Normal, Illinois. John was born in Kewanee, Illinois on May 14, 1944 to John Edward Verbout, Sr. and Josephine Norton Verbout of Neponset, Illinois, and attended Neponset Grade and High Schools. In high school he met Melanie Holmes, his life-long love.

He is survived by his wife Melanie and two sons, Scott, Chandler, Arizona; and Shawn (Joan), Amherst, New Hampshire; his granddaughter, December Verbout,

Tempe, Arizona; his parents; two brothers, Jay (Barbara) Verbout, Mahomet, Illinois; and Jerry (Cindy) Verbout, Fulshear, Texas; two sisters, Carol Leininger, Bradford, Illinois; and Judy (Gordon) Connor, Farmington, Illinois; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Teresa Schuelke, Chandler, Arizona, was like a daughter to John, and Bernie Dunn was like a brother.

John and Melanie began married life in Peoria, Illinois, in 1962 where John worked for Swan Lake Cemetery, Tractor Supply Co. and the U.S. Post Office. After his sons were born, he enrolled at Illinois State University and graduated with his B.S. in Business Education in 1968. He taught bookkeeping and typing, and coached basketball and football at Kewanee High School.  He returned to I.S.U. for graduate work in geography, then began working as an accountant at the university. In 1970 he went on to further graduate study in geology at Montana State University, followed by a return to I.S.U. to work in accounting as an assistant bursar. He supervised the cashiers’ office full-time for twenty-nine years and worked part-time eleven more years after retirement in 1999, for a total of forty years.

John was very proud of his staff and viewed them as friends as well as colleagues. He also often said that he had excellent supervisors, and they were friends as well. During his life he believed in trying to learn more about the world, and to that end he loved reading about banking, investing, history, geography, science, and travel. He especially loved visiting the mountain states of the West and Northwest. He read more than five hundred books during retirement and took many memorable trips with Melanie throughout the United States. He also enjoyed trips with his friends, the Taylors and Schertzes, and with his friend Doug. Planning trips were his happiest times.

He believed in following The Golden Rule all his life. He loved his family and being with them. He cherished and respected his mother and father, and he was proud of Scott, December, Teresa, Shawn, and Joan. Most of all, he loved his wife of fifty-five years.

Per his wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest in a private service at Floral Hill Cemetery in Neponset, Illinois. Memorials to honor John may be made to Illinois Cancer Care, 3105 Magory Drive, Bloomington, Illinois, 61704. Gregory Scott Hinton

05 June 1952-07 May 2017

Gregory Scott Hinton
(fondly referred to by friends as “Mailman”)

Greg was deeply loved and respected as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He was a proud graduate of Valparaiso University receiving two degrees, one in political science and the other in geography, class of 1974.

After working for the I.R.S. for a brief period he then transferred to the U.S.P.S. where he continued to serve as a dedicated mail carrier in LeRoy, IL for many years.

He then enjoyed his retirement where Greg’s passion for sports, music, trains, family, good friends and good times filled his life.

The following email posted by a close friend says it all (Thanks Pete!):

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we mourn the passing of one of our own. Our comrade Greg “Mailman” Hinton has lost the fight and succumbed to organ failure stemming from Lewy Body Dementia...or what many of us would call unnaturally, natural causes.

Mailman was our friend, our neighbor and a voice of reason.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. We all will miss him as a peer and a contemporary.

We will miss his integrity, his humility AND his idiosyncrasies.

We will miss his Bloody Mary’s, his taste in classic rock, his fondness for the ponies.

We will miss his fervent love of sports including the Yankee’s, fantasy football and all things. Valparaiso.

We will miss his grand prognosticating.

We will miss buying him a Coca Cola or a Budweiser, or bumming him a smoke.

We will miss his well-traveled stories and his hippy inclinations.

We will miss his wonderful command of the language and the lexicon that was mostly his own with phrases like “Stunning”, “Just like stealin”, and “Benchbuster”. They were his. They are ours now too.

It brings a smile to OUR face to hear that there was a knowing smile on HIS face, as the bugler played “First Call” for the Kentucky Derby the day before he passed and that his last sips of Budweiser came during the race itself. That day was also his daughter’s anniversary and that, according to jean, you could tell there was no way in hell he was going to let go and bring down the festivities that day.

No, he stubbornly held on just one more night.

Life is unfair, and the last six – eight months have been the ultimate reminder. We watched the man we knew deteriorate into something he was not...and know that now, he is in a better place.

We toast your life Mailman, unafraid to shed tear in your honor...my friend.

We are all better people for having known you...my friend.

Farewell indeed....my friend.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047, 404-935-6444.
